TABLE OF CONTENTS
1.a.Orientation of the Shifter
Look at the pictures below. This is the correct and only acceptable orientation for the shifter you purchased. If you cannot find the picture that represents your car then follow the generic picture at the end of the page.
This is the general rule of installation
1. If there is a bend in the selector rod, then the concave ) side of the bend faces the road and the convex ( side of the bend faces the undercarriage of the car.
2. If there is an offset in the coupler joint then the offset raises the end of the selector rod away from the gearbox
3. If there is a bend in the lever then the top of the lever points backward. If there is an offset in the lever then the offset is to the back
4. The body of the selector rod is always on driver side and the pins in that selector rod point to the driver's side. except for 2002 5 speed conversion w 245G box
1.b. Correct Orientation e9xM3, and all e8x, e9x, F8x, G8x

2. Ultra Without Arm SORT OF AN INSTALLATION GUIDE
This is not a complete installation guide. It is meant only to highlight the differences between installing our shifter and installing the OEM mechanism. The OEM mechanism uses a ball that clicks into a preformed plastic bushing that sits in the OEM shift Arm . Ours uses a cartridge that bolts to the OEM shift Arm and foregoes the plastic bushing. The file showing these differences can be seen here
Should you need more basic info as to how to get to your shifter mechanism, then you may want to go to the MAD RUSSIAN website who has an extraordinarily detailed description of installing our Ultra Shifter With Arm. this page is at least 20 years old and is the best I have seen. Obviously this is not an e9X or and F8x or even a G8x car been worked on but the info is the same and if this is not enough for you you should hire a tech.
I also have some homemade videos somewhere on a hard drive that I used at one time or another that show a particular procedure such as removing the pin that holds the coupler joint from the shift rail, or how to remove the infamous "Jesus Clip" or how to pull a shift knob off. At one point I will find the time to upload them but if you need something like that hit me up.
So as not to appear too harsh, if you need more info prior to hiring a tech or if you need tech advice phone or email reach out to me by email Ronald@AutoSolutions.net, or by SMS at 816-6514269 or by WhatsApp at +1 816 6514269. I often get more installation info revealed to me like in this F87 You Tube install Video by Brintech Customs from Australia that is extremely well produced and shows the steps necessary to install a Ultra Shifter Without Arm in an M2. worth checking out.
3. Installing the Urethane Bronze Bushing Option
3.a. For all Applications
These are the steps for a foolproof install. The harder the bushing the closer you should follow these steps. they are likely the most efficient way to install 90a or 95 a bushings. For 80a and 70a many steps can be skipped. For one soft bushings are more compliant and while they are marked #2 and #4 their respective position in the carrier is not critical and can interchange.
A.Bushings are marked on the inside face with a 2 or a 4.B.#2 bushings are in-side bushings #4 are out-side bushingsC.Bronze core has a sharp end and a rounded endD. Sharp end goes into #2, Rounded end into #4E. install bushing without the core in carrier and test fit. sand lightly if necessary (80 grit sandpaper or finer)
F. Remove bushings
G. Insert core into #2 sharp end first. Insert #2 assembly with bronze core into carrier from the inside
E. Press #4 bushing into outer end of carrier past rounded end of bronze coreF. The bronze core should be somewhat centered and not completely on one side or the other. If needs be push core in to centerit ( use small socket,12mm or larger bolt, pencil etc...) lubricate lightly with non petroleum (vegetable oil, olive oil, silicone grease, soap)G. Install carrier on transmission. clip in place
3.b. E39M5, e39 540 e39 528 and Similar- Urethane Bronze Bushing Install
A few shift arms have their bushing housings very close together. And one of the OEM bushings is actually sitting in mid air contributing little to the performance of the shifter. In these cases we supply a bolt kit that spreads the load in a manner we think is more effective to get the most out of these bushings. This kit includes unequal thickness bushings for one side of the shift arm but are marked identical to the full thickness bushings. If you have received this kit install as shown in the pics below
4. Installing the AutoCross or the Ultra Shifter with Arm
4.a. Ultra Shifter with Arm
There are two files here. The first one Standard Instructions is a pdf of our old instructions from almost 20 years ago. it attempts to provide all the info needed to install any of our shifters built at that time. While it is not intended to help with the Ultra Shifter Without Arm some of its content is very much relevant if not particularly well organized. In the next few weeks or months I will modernize it. If this file is not helpful reach out to me by email Ronald@AutoSolutions.net, or by SMS at 816-6514269 or by WhatsApp at +1 816 6514269. I may have that info already, just not published. The second file is under the button titled Fitting the AutoX Assembly Onto the Gearbox this is just a compilation of photos to show how I am able to fit the AutoX without disassembling it. The AutoX is installed just like the Ultra Shifter with Arm but both the lever and the shift arm MUST be installed as an assembly. It is not permissible to separate them.
4.b. Ultra Shifter With Arm Best DIY Instructions
I found this on the Web several years ago. http://m3.madrussian.net/diy_as_ssk.shtml it is by far the best DIY I have seen for the Ultra Shifter With Arm. Should you need to install an AutoX you can just follow this while making sure you do not separate the Shift lever from the Shift Arm as described in the paragraph above. Heck you can follow this to start the installation of any shifter we make or any other vendor sells you. The principle of installation is the same and this DIY is very detailed. In all honesty if this is not enough for you to tackle a shifter project on any BMW then you should hire someone to do it . Or bribe with beer. This DIY is so good I have kept a copy of it in my toolbox for when friends show up at the shop to use the lift and install their shifters.
